A biopharma, a dental product supplier and a device manufacturer were among the top-rated employers for workplace culture in Great Place to Work’s recently updated rankings.

Medical device manufacturer Medtronic, biopharmaceutical company AbbVie and supplements brand H&H Group (Swisse Wellness) were among the top-rated workplaces in Australia for 2024, as ranked by Great Place to Work Australia.

Featuring 100 organisations with a total of more than 144,500 employees, winners were announced across four separate categories: micro companies (less than 30 employees), small companies (30 to 99 employees), medium companies (100 to 999 employees) and large companies (1000 or more employees)

Leading Australian vitamins and supplements brand Swisse Wellness, owned by international health and nutrition company H&H Group, was head of the pack in healthcare, placing fourth out of 30 “medium” companies for organisational culture with 97% of employees describing it as a great place to work compared to an average of 56% across Australia (calculated based on Great Place to Work’s 2021 National Employee Engagement Study).

Medtronic ranked 11th for workplace culture among “medium” companies with 89% of employees saying the company was a great place to work, followed by dental equipment supplier Henry Schein Australia in 12th place with 87%.

Among “small” companies, NDIS registered service provider Unify Disability Service was the only dedicated healthcare company to feature in the list, placing 28th out of 30 with 95% of employees saying the provider had established a great workplace culture for its staff.

For “micro” companies with fewer than 30 employees, WA-based private physiotherapy practice Spine & Sports ranked 9th with 100% of employees agreed that it was a great place to work, while Victoria-based dental product supplier Adam Dental ranked 20th for workplace culture.

Overall winners for best workplace were IT and professional services firm Katana1 among “micro” companies and Sydney-based IT specialist Macquarie Cloud Services for “small” companies.

Adobe took out the top spot for medium companies and Cisco for large companies.

According to Rebecca Moulynox, general manager of Great Place To Work Australia, the latest results showed employees were placing less value on workplace camaraderie and greater emphasis on security, stability and trustworthy leadership amid growing cost-of-living pressures and climbing inflation rates

“As external challenges intensify, employees increasingly value leaders who are not only consistent and ethical but also transparent,” Ms Moulynox said.

“The growing scepticism towards executive teams underscores the need for leaders to not only implement decisive actions but also to communicate these actions clearly and openly.”

Great Place to Work’s annual best workplaces rankings are based on findings from the Great Place To Work® Trust Index™ survey, designed to gauge employees’ relationship with their job, colleagues and management through confidential quantitative and qualitative feedback provided via responses to 60 statements measured on a five-point scale and two open-ended questions.

Findings are compiled to provide a Trust Index score reflecting the percentage of employees who consider their company to be a great workplace.

Companies included in the medium and large categories are also asked to provide responses to six essay questions interrogating what sets them apart as a great workplace, although rankings are ultimately decided by employee survey data.

To be eligible for the list, companies must first be certified with Great Place To Work Certified™, have 10 or more employees in the country they are being certified, and be operating in the industry relevant to a specific industry list if applicable (i.e. healthcare, technology).

All companies must pay a program fee to receive Great Place to Work certification, with pricing for the two packages available, determined by a range of “various factors” such as organisational size, according to the Great Place to Work website.
