But as the 1918-19 flu pandemic was causing havoc around the world, Australia mounted a surprisingly strong and sophisticated response that slowed it down and probably saved a huge number of lives, says Euan Tovey, an Associate Professor (retired) at the Woolcock Institute in Sydney.
