Here’s a technology development that literally makes your skin crawl. A computer interface wrapped in “skin” to give it a more “human” feel.

Researchers from France and the UK have reportedly developed a human-inspired artificial skin said to be able to “augment” devices such as smartphones, touchpads and smartwatches.

The “skin”, which looks and feels “real”, can apparently detect a variety of gestures allowing these electronic devices to “feel” the user’s touch and distinguish between different gestures, such as a pinch, a tickle or a stroke, and “convey the human resonance” of that gesture to the device.

For example, the intensity of the user’s touch controls the size of the emojis, the research team’s lead author told media. “A strong grip conveys anger while tickling the skin displays a laughing emoji and tapping creates a surprised emoji,” he said.

Dunno about you, but we’re getting flashbacks to the Silence of the Lambs, and not in a good way.
