What can immunisation programs abroad tell us about vaccine success?


We’ve been following the latest news about the COVID vaccine rollout in Australia.

This week, TMR’s resident pandemic reporter Bianca Nogrady reveals how the overseas immunisation programs are tracking, and what this might tell us about the real-time efficacy of the vaccines.
So far, COVID-19 vaccination has already been linked to a decline in hospitalisations in England and Scotland.

A non-peer-reviewed preprint which evaluated the early impact of the vaccines found the efficacy of preventing COVID-19 hospital admission peaked at 28-34 days after vaccination, and was 85% among those receiving the Pfizer vaccine and 94% in those receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.
