The fate of antibiotics in our fight against multi-drug resistant bacteria could be decided by these tiny bacteria-eating viruses.


As the powers of antibiotics slowly wane, scientists are having to search further afield for strategies to combat resistant bacteria.

The financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to develop new antibiotics is almost zero, with the World Health Organisation telling manufacturers to keep any new drugs in reserve so they are able to work for longer.

Perhaps the solution doesn’t lie in developing more and more antibiotics.

This episode we turn our attention to bacteriophages (or phages) and their bacteria-devouring properties which make them a promising alternative.
