Only a small proportion of infants with constipation will need referral, says Dr Rupert Hinds
Only a small proportion of infants with constipation need referral, says Dr Rupert Hinds.
“The transition to solids is often a constipating time,” says Dr Hinds, a paediatric gastroenterologist at Monash University.
“Constipation will eventually settle over time without any intervention. And, actually, if it doesn’t, a brief course of stool softeners, like lactulose … can break the cycle.”
Constipation should raise red flags when it starts in the first month of life, long before solids have been introduced, or where there are co-existing symptoms.
