Impaired glucose tolerance is one of several markers of prediabetes.
All of these markers, including an increase in fasting glucose or a slightly elevated A1C, indicate poor glucose control and make it likely that a patient will go on to develop diabetes in their lifetime.
“Now, you can slow that by many kinds of different interventions,” says Professor Merlin Thomas, a diabetologist at Monash University.
Exercise, weight loss, and drugs such as metformin can reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
