Take 6: Reducing scarring

1 minute read

What techniques can reduce scarring when removing skin lesions?

The best technique to minimise scarring when removing skin lesions, according to dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta, is spot ablative laser, either with erbium or carbon dioxide resurfacing laser delivered in a spot technique.

“I personally use a spot erbium laser,” Dr Gupta says in the following video.

“The most important thing is the lesion needs to be benign,” she says.

“So, you need to be confident that you are dealing with … a sebaceous hyperplasia or something like that.

“I have seen patients who have been treated with other techniques using a hyfrecator and are content to leave a hypopigmented patch or a depressed scar.

“It can happen with laser as well, however the advantage of the resurfacing lasers is that they are very tuneable, which means we can dial up and down the depth in nanometer or micrometre increments.

“ So it is incredibly precise, more precise than the best human hand, the best plastic surgeon, the best dermatologist.”
