About 15 years after quitting cigarettes ex-smokers have almost the same CV risk as never-smokers
About 15 years after quitting cigarettes, ex-smokers have almost the same risk as never-smokers, says cardiologist Professor Andrew Sindone.
“The more cigarettes people have, and the older they are, the higher their chance of dying from coronary heart disease,” he says.
“It’s a dose-related effect. Cigarettes are poisonous and the more poison they have, the higher the chance of dying.”
If people stop smoking, their risk of CV declines.
“After about 15 years they are approaching a never smoker,” Professor Sindone says. “That’s something again that you can show your smoker.”
