Do you know what medications are approved for use in obesity in Australia?
Associate Professor Samantha Hocking, Endocrinologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney, says there are four pharmacotherapies doctors should know about for obesity.
“These medications won’t be for everyone and all obesity medications need to be tailored to the specific patient population,” she says.
The drugs approved for use in obesity include:
- Phentermine (Duromine) 6% weight loss compared to placebo
- Orlistat (Xenical) 4% weight loss compared to placebo
- Liraglutide 6% weight loss compared to placebo
- Naltrexone-Bupropion (Contrave) 5% weight loss compared to placebo
