Intermittent symptoms of allergic sinusitis usually only need to be treated with intermittent therapies, such as antihistamines, says Associate Professor Kymble Spriggs.
But some patients may require more intensive treatment, he says.
“For more persistent, chronic symptoms, especially for allergic sinusitis, we often use topical corticosteroids as a primary treatment,” says Associate Professor Spriggs, an specialist allergist and immunologist based in Melbourne.
Sinus rinses can be very useful for patients with chronic symptoms, he says.
Over the long term, patients can control symptoms by trying to avoid allergens. But this requires knowledge of what is causing the allergy in the first place.
