Are there any differences between the different types of iron supplements?
The short answer is “no”, says Dr Pradeep Jayasuriya, a GP and the past director of research at the RACGP in WA.
While manufacturers will provide research showing their product is superior, at a practical level there is very little difference.
“The exception may well be the new kid on the block: iron polymaltose,” he says.
“And certainly the evidence from the research that the pharmaceutical companies [provide] is impressive.
“But the proof of the pudding is always what happens in real life when we use it. So I think we have to wait and see.”
