Nutritional deficiency is related to an increased risk of a mental disorder later on in life, says Felice Jacka, a professor of nutritional and epidemiological psychiatry at Deakin University.
Exposure to famine in the second and third trimesters has been linked to uni and bipolar disorder in offspring.
Low birth weight has been tied to coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, unfavourable glucose and insulin metabolism, dyslipidaemia, chronic lung disease and polycystic ovarian disease.
Similarly, overnutrition is thought to be detrimental to child brain development.
