Weight gain following childbirth is likely to be an epigenetic phenomenon in susceptible women
Weight gain following childbirth is likely to be an epigenetic phenomenon in susceptible women, Professor Joseph Proietto, an endocrinologist at The University of Melbourne, says.
“Thirty-five percent of women who have presented to our clinic have told us that their obesity started after pregnancy.”
Certain medications, such as antipsychotics and anti-diabetic medication have also been known to cause weight gain in patients.
“It has to be a combination of the drug and a genetic predisposition because not all patients given antipsychotics put on weight,” says Professor Proietto.
