The idea that fibre is just an indigestible bulking agent is changing, Dr David Topping, a nutrition scientist and honorary fellow with CSIRO Health and Biosecurity in Adelaide, says.
There is a growing recognition that important fibre components are fermented by the large bowel bacteria, and that many of the benefits ascribed to fibre are actually due to this fermentation and its products, he says.
