These two conditions can be difficult to distinguish; the trick is to watch FSH levels.
People with premature ovarian failure or hypothalamic amenorrhea both have low oestrogen levels, but hypothalic amenorrhoea has a low FSH, while premature ovarian insufficiency has a high FSH.
Patients with premature ovarian insufficiency are often confused with patients with hypothalic amenorrhoea, but FSH can be used to make the differential diagnosis, says Professor Rod Baber, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Sydney.
