In this video, Professor Ego Seeman describes the difference in efficacy between osteoporosis medications


When treating osteoporosis, experts have found antiresorptive agents to be the most effective pharmaceutical intervention for managing the condition.

Professor Ego Seeman, Endocrinologist at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne says the most powerful of these inhibitors of bone resorption is denosumab (Prolia, Xgeva).

“It acts by preventing the reabsorption of existing osteoclasts but also prevents the birth of new osteoclasts,” he says.

“Virtually [denosumab] totally eliminates bone remodelling.”

There is another class of drugs that also acts as a powerful remodelling suppressant, but this is to a lesser degree than denosumab.
