What is the effect of menopause on a woman’s risk of heart disease?

“We know that oestrogen during the female lifespan is protective against CVD and when women reach menopause and their oestrogen levels progressively drop that cardio-protective effect is lost,” says Dr Hendrik Zimmet, a cardiologist and the Associate Clinical Dean at the Central Clinical School at Monash University.

“As a result, we tend to see heart disease in general often present later, particularly cardiovascular disease … later in life in women.”
