Fine needle aspiration biopsy should only be used to aspirate a cyst which is really painful for a patient, says Dr Lazarus


Breast biopsies should be performed whenever a mass is detected on an ultrasound, experts say.

Dr Elizabeth Lazarus, a breast radiologist from Spectrum Medical Imaging in Randwick, says to biopsy solid mass found on initial imaging as well as any complex cysts.

“Complex cysts are ones that have thick walls and increased vascularity,” she says.

These biopsies should be performed using a core biopsy needle.

“I would only use a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy to aspirate a cyst which is symptomatic – we do not touch cysts unless they are really painful,” says Dr Lazarus.
