HRT can be given to women with migraines but there’s a trick
The mode of delivery of HRT must be modified for patients with migraines.
For hormonally sensitive migraines that people previously got with their period, the trick is to keep the oestradiol level pretty constant, says Professor Bronwyn Stuckey, a clinical endocrinologist and the medical director at the Keogh Institute for Medical Research in WA.
“Sometimes people are sensitive to the tablets so the oestrogen goes up and comes down and usually those people will be better on transdermal. And for migraine with aura you shouldn’t use oral. You can use transdermal.”
The contraindications for HRT include oestrogen-dependant tumours, most commonly breast cancer, but also endometrial cancer.
