The popularity of Depo Provera has waxed and waned over time, but for some women it is the best choice, says Dr Paddy Moore.
Dr Moore, a paediatric and adolescent gynaecologist and head of contraceptive and abortion services at The Royal Womenâs Hospital in Melbourne, says Depo Provera has the highest chance of any of the injectable progesterone-only drugs of causing no periods.
It may be the best option for a patient wanting to supress their periods for menstrual management as the effects last for three months at a time, she says.
For example, a young woman who is in a wheel chair or has cerebral palsy and canât manage her periods may benefit from Depo Provera. Patients with endometriosis with irregular bleeding may prefer this form of contraception.
