Studies show that the antidepressant agomelatine is about 60% effective in improving symptoms and has minimal side effects.
“What you want is people getting back into their lives and after 12 weeks of agomelatine, the studies tell us that about 60% of people are back doing the stuff they were doing before, which is ultimately what we want people to be able to do,” says Dr Tom Paterson, a psychiatrist and the director of the Adelaide Clinic Community Service.
Agomelatine has a short half-life and limited side effects, he says. “It is the best-tolerated drug I’ve ever prescribe for people.”
