A double whammy treatment of prostate cancer with radiation and hormone therapy improves outcomes
A double whammy treatment of prostate cancer with radiation and hormone therapy improves outcomes.
âThe radiation kills the cancer and the lack of testosterone kills more cancer,â says Professor Jeremy Millar, the director of Radiation Oncology at Alfred Health.

Luteinissing hormone-releasing hormone agonists, leuprolide or goserelin, temporarily reduce testosterone and slow the growth of the cancer.
âCastration has been known since 1941 to have a dramatic effect on prostate cancer,â said Professor Millar.
âA remarkable finding that won Huggins a Nobel Prize for medicine and it is used now in a more pharmaceutical way by these depo injections to cause effective castration by reducing testosterone levels.â
