Type 2 diabetes doubles a patient's risk of death
Globally, there are about 380 million people living with diabetes.
âThatâs going to rise to 592 million by 2035,â says cardiologist Professor Andrew Sindone.
Diabetes caused about 4.9 million deaths in 2014 and cardiovascular disease is the principal cause of death, he says.
On average, a 50-year old with diabetes but no history of vascular disease is around six years younger at the time of death than a counterpart without diabetes.
