Sydney will host more than 4000 family doctors at WONCA 2022, the largest international gathering of its kind

The World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA) conference will be held in Australia in 2022, the first time the event has been held here in 50 years.

The RACGP announced its successful bid for the conference earlier this week, with Sydney to host more than 4000 family doctors at the largest international gathering of its kind.

RACGP President Dr Harry Nespolon said the event would create an environment to share research and discuss best practice.

“This gives us the chance to put Australia on an international stage,” he said.

Dr Nespolon said Australia was known to “punch well above our weight when it comes to world’s best practice and the standards within general practice”.

“Meeting other doctors in our field, hearing their stories, and learning from their experiences will be a most effective way for Australian GPs and their healthcare teams to make decisions that ensure their practice is more efficient and delivers world-class healthcare,” he said.

WONCA is a not-for-profit organisation made up of half a million members. The organisation advocates for its members with the World Health Organisation.

New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the conference was an opportunity to adapt for the future needs of healthcare in Australia.

“Best-practice primary health care is fundamental to our world-class health system in delivering improved outcomes for patients,” he said.

The RACGP partnered with strategic bidding organisation BESydney to bid for the hosting rights for WONCA 2022 which will be held at International Convention Centre in Sydney.
