Supervisors beg for more detail on college-led training

Those involved in training the next generation of GPs say they have been left in the dark.

The transition to college-led GP training risks destabilising a speciality already under great pressure, West Australian supervisors and practice managers say.

The chairs of WA’s Supervisor, Registrar, and Practice Manager Advisory Councils sent an open letter earlier this month to the Department of Health, ACRRM and the RACGP expressing concerns about the return of training to the colleges in 2023.

I was involved in GP Training for over twenty years through several major upheavals – all instigated by government. I think those in WAGPET did not have to experience the loss of educator expertise that happened a few years ago in NSW for instance. My impression was that with every change the government’s aims and rationale became more seemingly vague and opaque but actually more focused on using training as a lever to appear to respond to complex rural workforce issues (rather than quality training for general practice). If you are in that hinterland between metropolitan and “really rural” it is very challenging. The government approach perhaps assumes that keeping people in the dark keeps them on their toes somehow. The sad fact is that, despite general practice having become less attractive over recent decades, many doctors were actually attracted to GP training because of its reputation for flexibility, quality and its support and personal nature. Recent changes have eroded these attractive features. The RACGP was certainly able to manage training previously but they will be much more constrained by the “accountability” required by government and the way government exercises its control.
