Given we’ve got so many stories this week on the impact of artificial intelligence and telehealth start-ups in Australian medicine, we thought it best to run through the basics on how a “robot”, or “bot”, as the AI guys love to say, actually arrives at an important medical decision

Your story about robots in medicine got me thinking about the great changes that have happened in medicine in the past 25 years.
Years ago just to order a CT scan of the brain would take weeks and be done under the orders of neurologists, and usually in the main teaching hospital of the area.
Nowadays CT scans are done by nearly every radiology clinic. Furthermore the biggest change in medicine has been the use of secure emails to receive our radiology and pathology in a matter of hours, not days.
On a different level there have been great advances in the field of surgery, most important one being the use of keyhole surgery for just about all types of common surgical procedures.
With respect to treatments of prostate, robotics is one of the mainstays and I can envisage a future where more and more work will be done by dedicated robotics in a variety of surgical conditions.
The the rise and rise of the Internet and the various apps that are now on most smartphones are also changing the face of medicine and what was unheard of years ago, mainly Skyping as a consultation, is now commonplace. Even though computers and smart phones are not technically robots they are doing a lot of the work of robots in medicine and I feel that in the future human intervention and a lot of surgical procedures will be cut to a minimum.
Fortunately for us to practitioners there isn’t a robot that can replace us: after all a lot of our consultation involves not only taking history but actually examining the patient and being available to show emotions to the patient which a robot cannot do.
