NSW GP Dr Ayman Shenouda (second from right) is running for the RACGP presidency with a pledge to help GPs devise business models to cope with an era of change
The chair of the RACGP’s National Rural Faculty, appears to be the first to declare his candidacy in the race, for which nominations close on 30 May.
“I think the college can do more to help doctors devise small-business models for the challenges facing general practice. We need to support the viability of general practice,” he says.
A passionate rural doctor who trained initially as a surgeon, Dr Shenouda was the RACGP’s 2009 Practitioner of the Year. He migrated to Australia 24 years ago and settled happy in the NSW Riverina city of Wagga Wagga 17 years ago.
“Rural practice is under a lot of strain because of the changes we are dealing with, but I also think things are improving,” he says, noting the gains in rural training. “Rural practice is also a joy.”
Dr Shenouda says the team approach and engagement with complexity, which are hallmarks of rural medicine, will help shape new models of care for general practice in Australia.
