The optimal time between AstraZeneca doses is 12 weeks, but partial protection now may beat waiting.
With Greater Sydney facing the Delta strain of covid-19, the NSW government has urged individuals to have their second AstraZeneca dose six weeks after their first shot, rather than wait until the generally recommended 12-week mark.
Since this episode was recorded, ATAGI updated their position, saying patients could receive the second dose of the vaccine anytime between four and eight weeks after their first dose.
This would offer better protection for patients in covid hotspots, however 12 weeks was still considered optimal for long-term protection against the virus.
This episode we’re joined by Associate Professor Nathan Bartlett, a viral immunologist at the University of Newcastle, to talk about the decision to shorten the interval, and how six weeks is just as optimal as eight weeks.
