Dr Nathan Connelly gives Dr David Lim the lowdown.
In this episode:
- Don’t call it NAFLD, it’s Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease – MAFLD (or Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease) as it is part of the Insulin Resistance Metabolic Spectrum
- LFTs useless in monitoring and staging severity, these patients must be staged early using a fibroscan or ARFI (Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse) Ultrasound to measure liver stiffness
- Treatment is weight loss, weight loss, weight loss… Even very severe disease will improve.
- Most importantly, manage the patient’s cardiovascular risk factors aggressively, all patients with MAFLD are at high risk of dying from CVD
