Sarcopenia, or the decline of skeletal muscle tissue with age, is one of the most important causes of functional decline and loss of independence in older adults.
The condition affects about 35% of the total population over the age of 65 and is expected to become more prevalent in Australia and New Zealand with the increasing age of our population.

Andrea Maier is a Professor of Ageing and Gerontology and leads research groups at both the University of Melbourne in Australia and the VU University in The Netherlands. Professor Maier is the Divisional Director of Medicine and Community Care at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia and also finds time to give keynote presentations at multiple international conferences.
