Australia’s vaccine sprint offers ‘real-time’ immunity

The rapid uptake has given NSW an edge against the virus by enabling a large proportion of recent immunity in the population.


Australia’s largest state emerged from a three month lockdown about two weeks ago but covid cases have continued to trend downwards.

While high vaccination rates were predicted to protect the public against a dramatic increase in hospitalisations and death, a decrease in overall daily case numbers were not.

Professor Jamie Triccas, a medical microbiologist at the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases, joins The Tea Room to explain why NSW’s daily covid cases might have decreased, despite the state opening up.
