The Back Page: Massive blunder by Vic govt on face masks?

The Back Page

With face masks soon becoming mandatory in Melbourne, The Back Page is honestly a little concerned by the lack of quality fashion advice from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

The state government’s advice has been very sound from a public health perspective, no question.

From midnight on Wednesday, people living in Melbourne or Mitchell Shire will be required to wear face masks when leaving the house or face a $200 fine.

The Victorian government has advised people to either buy a mask or make their own from three layers of clothing and shoelaces.

That’s all fairly affordable and do-able if you’ve got a pair of scissors and a needle and thread.

But nowhere on the Department’s website are crucial fashion tips that will help give this bold, apocalyptic look its much-needed “wow” factor.

Yes, we’re putting everything we can into the pandemic response but have we let RuPaul down?

Ok… deep breaths in… There are still a few precious hours left in this city-wide fashion challenge.

The Back Page has done an extensive review of the literature (world-first research here) and here are some of the fashion-forward face masks on the internet.

    1. Comedy mask – You’re never fully dressed without a smile! (Even if you can’t see it under a face mask…)

    2. Solid gold mask – Indian businessman Shankar Kurhade was spotted wearing a $4,000 face mask made out of gold. No idea how they made this breathable.
    3. Fascinator masksBe prepared for this year’s Melbourne Cup.
    4. Put a sock in it – This video of how to make a sock mask is mesmerising. (FYI The Victorian government advises making masks using THREE layers of clothing so the single-layer sock isn’t good enough for Aussie standards.)

    5. Retro style – Why not indulge yourself with a glamorous 50s throwback?
