Vaginal laser treatment is an innovative therapy which could help women experiencing genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause symptoms can include burning, discomfort, itch, discharge and even bleeding or bladder symptoms such as dysuria, frequency, and urgency.

Dr Yasmin Tan, gynaecologist and a laparoscopic surgeon, says the lasers act on the vaginal mucosa and the connective tissues beneath.

“The heat from the laser stimulates new collagen fibres being laid down and that helps with the tissues being reconditioned,” Dr Tan says.

Lactobacillus, a bacterium found in the urinary system, depletes during menopause, changing the pH of the vagina and causing problems for some women, like GSM.

Vaginal laser therapy can help return these bacteria and make the tissues feel more comfortable for women, Dr Tan says.

“It’s about symptom relief, not necessarily about a cure. It’s just one option for treatment of these conditions and there is no reason why you can’t use them in conjunction with other traditional treatments to get the best outcome,” Dr Tan says.
