Dr Jason Wenderoth, an interventional neuroradiologist, explains which patients are eligible.

Trials in 2014 and 2015 determined that patients who have a large vessel occlusion and/or patients who are not eligible for thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator should be candidates for vascular clot retrieval, he says.

“Large vessel is a bit of a catch-all term but it refers to anything from the intracranial vertebral artery to the top of the basilar artery or the carotid artery or the cerebral artery or the proximal branches of the middle cerebral artery in the anterior circulation.”
