The most common source of iron in vegetarian diets comes from cereals, green leafy vegetables, eggs and nuts


Dr Pradeep Jayasuriya, a Perth GP and past RACGP director of research with a special interest in iron deficiency, says there is a multitude of iron which can be found in plant-based diets.

The most common source of iron in vegetarian diets is from cereals, green leafy vegetables, eggs and nuts.

“If you had to give a vegetarian patient one piece of advice it’s that the highest amount of iron is found in cereal,” says Dr Jayasuriya. “That’s because most breakfast cereals in Australia are fortified with iron.”
