“It is not uncommon to have one registered nurse for say 60 beds,” says Liz Reymond, a palliative medicine specialist and the deputy director of Metro South Palliative Care Services in Queensland.

“If you’ve got one person in that facility who is dying and they need a breakthrough pain injection, for instance, it means that nurse plus one other need to be taken off the floor to provide that medication,” she says.
