Take 2: Medications for postpartum pain syndromes

1 minute read

Simple analgesics and even opioids (when used short-term) may be appropriate for women with postpartum pain

Opioids may be an appropriate short-term prescription for women with postpartum pain says Dr Jason Chow, pain physician, gynaecologist and obstetrician at the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney.

Opioids are OK to prescribe in the early postpartum period particularly if the patient had a C-section or a challenging vaginal birth,” he says. “But it’s not something you want to use long term.”

When treating pain syndromes doctors should keep in mind breastfeeding and use medications which have minimal risk to the baby and don’t risk changing breast milk supply.

“We also have to be aware of any comorbidities, especially if they have a history of mental health or are on another medication such as antidepressants,” Dr Chow says.

Simple analgesics such as paracetamol and NSAIDs also provide safe pain relief for women.
