TOPIC: Managing Borderline Personality Disorder in Primary Care

Prof Gordon Parker AO, Scientia Professor of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales

Gordon will overview the key features of borderline personality disorder and explain how it is best differentiated from the bipolar disorders. Several clinical vignettes will be provided to illustrate best practice management principles followed by candid advice on how more effectively to deal with tricky and sensitive scenarios that GPs often find themselves in when dealing with this condition.

TOPIC: Anxiety in Children – What GPs Need to Know

Prof Jennie Hudson, Director, Centre for Emotional Health, Macquarie University

If we want to raise healthy adults, then we need to focus on raising emotionally healthy children. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders and emerge the earliest. This presentation explores the development of anxiety, management options and how GPs can more effectively detect, assess, manage and where necessary refer children with these increasingly common disorders.

TOPIC: Depression Update

Dr Jon-Paul Khoo, Consultant Psychiatrist, Toowong Specialist Clinic

This brief presentation will first consider antidepressant efficacy, before focusing on options and comparative effectiveness, optimising outcome by minimising ‘pseudo-resistance’ and finishing with evidence-based strategies when first-line antidepressant therapy fails.

TOPIC: Management of Metabolic Dysregulation in Patients on Antipsychotics

Dr Matthew Warden, Director AIS at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne

Psychotropic weight gain and metabolic syndrome significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality of those taking antipsychotics, impacting both mental health and patients’ willingness to adhere to treatment. Matthew will describe practical strategies for GPs to manage metabolic problems associated with psychotropics.
